It took an agonizing four days before she heard from Caroline Fenton. Both Steve and Uncle Stavros had called her on the new phone and temporarily raised her heart rate. Her uncle was saying farewell and assuring her he would relay her situation first to her father and subsequently to her Aunt Lynn and her cousin Sarah, Michael and Caroline’s mother. He added another choice into the mix by saying she would always be welcome on Paros where most of the extended Greek Kyriakos’ family still lived.

Steve sounded anxious to hear any news but she had nothing to tell him, other than he would be the first to know, whatever developed.

Caroline Fenton called in the evening of the fourth day. Rena was in her room surveying her limited wardrobe and wondering what was suitable to wear to meet the Canadian High Commissioner or his representative.

“Rena Kyriakos? Hello, this is Caroline Fenton. I suppose we are cousins of some degree. My grandfather has filled me in on your predicament, but I need to ask a number of questions before I can proceed.”

“Of course! Thank you for taking the time for this. I have no clue what to do at this stage. Any help will be immensely appreciated.”

“Don’t expect too much, Rena. I will find out what I can but I cannot promise much. Yours is a very unusual situation and it may require some unusual solutions, none of which occur to me at the moment.”

“I see.”

“Try not to be downhearted. There is always hope.”

“What do you need to know?”

“I understand you have been a ghost for the last two years.”

“Excuse me?”

“Sorry, it’s a term used to describe someone who does not exist in any official records. Is that correct?”

“Well, I never applied for any public assistance in England and I used cash for any purchases.

I bought only minor items like clothing and owned nothing in my own name.”

“Good. It will be perceived that you have not been a burden on the system although I understand you did hold down a job during your stay.”

“Yes, I was very lucky to be employed by a wonderful man who overlooked my lack of a work visa.

He was essential to my survival and I am anxious that he not be punished for his kindness.”

“That is a separate issue. Leave it aside for now.

What concerns me more, Rena, is the fact that you entered the United Kingdom under false pretences and remained beyond the period you declared necessary on your landing card. That is a serious crime.

I am not sure about the consequences. I need to do more research. In these days of public fears about terrorist infiltration, it may be dealt with severely by the courts.”

Caroline heard the intake of breath from the other end of the line and hurried to reassure her listener.

“We have one major advantage, Rena. My partner, James Patterson, is Canadian and he has contacts in the Canadian Embassy in London. We will probably start there.

Try not to worry. It’s early days yet.
